Kansas Public Utility and Energy Lawyers

Public utility and energy law has been a foremost focus for the firm since its founding.

One of the firm's founders, Richard C. Byrd, was past chairman of the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC), and the firm has represented companies before the KCC for more than 60 years.

Attorney James Flaherty previously worked at the KCC as an assistant general counsel between 1982 and 1985, and has worked at Anderson & Byrd, LLP, for 30 years. He previously served as the president of the Oil and Gas Section of the Kansas Bar, and is a member of the federal Energy Bar Association and Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association. For the past six years, he has been listed in both Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers of America Energy Law sections.

Although Mr. Flaherty represents the KCC-regulated utilities in all types of proceedings before the KCC, he has particular expertise in litigating utility rate cases before the KCC, having litigated over 100 utility rate cases, and assisting most of the state's major utility companies with their rate cases.

He has also represented other natural gas, water and telephone companies in cases before the KCC. Mr. Flaherty has particular expertise in utility mergers and acquisitions that are required to be filed with the KCC for approval, having been involved in nearly all of the major acquisitions and mergers cases in the past 30 years that have been filed with the KCC.
